Ossiforestation by JoeMacGown Ossiforestation by JoeMacGown
watercolor and ink, 29 X 21 inches on thick watercolor paper

I was trying to infuse some Celtic nature stuff into a skull

Your unique vision and insight here is refreshing. The "skull like" imagery provides the viewer a fresh look at an age old theme. This is definitely an interesting approach for you in that it is a 3-D representation of an object (of sorts), as opposed to covering the drawing surface entirely with imagery. It is intriguing that it is not symmetrical, which only adds to the overall interest of the piece.
The execution and use of media is exceptional. Astonishing details surprise the viewer and demand a closer look.
The use of watercolor washes and ink together creates a striking image, subtle washes combined with the crisp ink overlay demonstrates your masterful technique as an artist.
Very original and unique - will attract a lot of attention.
This piece resonates a tactile quality, I want to touch it. I want to examine it closer... it "calls" to me. I love when a work of art pulls the viewer in closer. This one, Joe, really blows my mind!

This is a pure, visual treat, showcasing superb craftsmanship as well as a whole new level of what possibilities watercolours can attain. Such depth and immaculate detail requires so much skill for a medium widely known for its fluctuating temperament, that it's such a delight to see definition achieved to such sculptural quality.

The fusion of a scull along with the growth of organic elements is so straightforward a concept, thus all the more novel. The slight asymmetry combined with all the intricate movements within movements gives rise to a sensation of circulation, and natural balance.

This is something I'd love to see realised three-dimensionally, and placed large scale in my living room for my own personal pleasure ;)

Thanks Deborah. The original looks really cool and is fairly large. I did it on really thick watercolor paper, and that was mounted so the deckled edges could be seen. And I found some beautiful frame stock for it. A heavy, greenish deal with specks of black and gold and and inner raised border of gold. Then a double mat with green and white.

there is a site that is something like Draw your own ring. I think they are those digital plastic or metal mandlebulb guys who make those intricate squares

Spider looks-alike, but oh wait, no, it's simply incomprehensible.

Glad you like it!

I made up the name (Ossiforestation). It is a combination of the word "ossification", which is the process of bone growth, and the word "forestation", because I wanted the picture to have a stronger connection to nature, especially trees, and to represent the cycle of rebirth. Out of old bones and gods comes new life and magical forests.

Absolutely amazing. You have a serious and yet very flowing familiarity with your mediums as well as with Celtic art. I had designed a tattoo in this style and the best I could come up with was black and white lineart insofar, I haven't even added in anything resembling the gorgeous texture and color you have here.

oh for a larger version, or just to see the original...

mysterious, it holds your attention and unravels at your curiosity... so much too see and imagine like cloud shapes in the detail...

ferns, sparring horses, and motionless dingos..

( imho ) a misty grey or faun background wash ? something other than white... a thought is all. really it's a way cool drawing.

The original does look pretty cool, I have it in an show here in Mississippi right now, just come on over and check it out. I like the idea of some misty background, wish I had thought of that. But, it is not too white, kind of that slightly off-white that thick watercolor paper tends to have. I left the rough edges of the paper showing too, when I framed it, which helped. Glad you like it....
